Travels in Mexico

Coyoacan

Mexico City is composed of sixteen districts, each one was a separate community before they were swallowed up by the capital.  Collectively, they are referred to as the "Distrito Federal" or Federal District.  Coyoacan (Place of the Coyotes in Nahuatl) was Cortes's base after the fall of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Over the years it has also been the home of Leon Trotsky, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and ex-President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.  The plaza is well worth visiting, especially on the weekend, if only to have your portrait done in pancakes.

Typical colonial architecture

A romantic place for stroll by young couples in love.

It gets a little crowded.

These kids and their parents come from the state of Nayarit on the west cost to sell their hand-crafts.  This egg is a poor sample, but it shows the typical hexagonal design.  It's said that the works have religious significance and the artists are inspired by peyote.

Statuary abound

Halloween in Mexico spans at least two days.  Building and decorating elaborate "ofrendas", to honor ancestors, is major part of the celebration.

The Parroquia de San Juan Bautista, on the south side of the Plaza Hidalgo

This little kid came around selling flowers while we were waiting for our pancakes.

Have your portrait done in pancakes at the back of the market. The inset in the lower left is Yoko's attempt to try this at home.  Obviously, it's a job best left to the professionals.
